What is Fibrosis treatment?
Fibrosis is the most common effect of a lot of surgeries that people face today. While liposuction can sculpt a better shape, sometimes it results in an uneven surface caused by fibrosis.
Fibrosis after liposuction refers to the imperfections occurring as a result of the procedure. These can include lumps, scarring and thickened areas of tissue. Fibrosis is generally soft and fatty (gel-like consistency) or sometimes a dense solid mass, and is formed as a result of prolonged swelling.
Fibrosis is similar to the process of scarring, in that both involve stimulated fibroblasts laying down connective tissue, including collagen. The process is initiated when immune cells, such as macrophages [a type of white blood cell] release soluble factors that stimulate fibroblasts. These ultimately lead to the proliferation and activation of fibroblasts, which deposit extracellular matrix into the surrounding connective tissue.
What are the causes of fibrosis after liposuction?
The first cause is the suction of fat using the liposuction cannula itself as the surgeon “pokes” under the skin causing a trauma. This trauma leads to inflammation and then the formation of fibrosis.
The surgeon cannot prevent fibrosis but the more trauma he causes during the surgery to the tissue the more fibrosis the patient will develop.
Secondly, the wrong compression causes the swelling to accumulate in particular places and dentation. The longer swelling you have the more fibrosis your body will form.
Thirdly, the wrong aftercare. The harder the massage the more trauma the therapist will cause and that creates extra scar tissue. MLD is a light massage especially during the first 10 days.
How to prevent Fibrosis
- Choose the right surgeon who has more experience and knows his limits.
- Choose the right type and size of garment.
- Use foams to reduce the swelling quickly.
- Make sure you’re compressed evenly all around.
- Use a waist trainer but make sure it’s the right one and does not fold.
- Choose the right aftercare therapist, make sure she is experienced with post surgeries.
- Make sure the therapist massages you lightly for the first 10 days.
- DO NOT use cavitation or skin tightening radiofrequency, these two will cause you more collagen production.
- DO NOT use wood therapy, it’s a very aggressive treatment and if used early while your body is still healing it will cause more scar tissue and unnecessary pain.
How to treat fibrosis
The first 10 days post-surgery generally we don’t feel much fibrosis so the MLD massage is supposed to be light. In very rare cases, fibrosis starts building up by day 4 or 5.
Once we start seeing fibrosis /scar tissue building up, we need to change the massage techniques, because now we are not dealing with fluid anymore but a jelly like substance or a hard lump. There are different massage techniques we use to break that. The earlier we start working on fibrosis the quicker we get rid of it. We use extra special pads as well to help the process and the patient needs to wear the compression garment (faja) every day during the day until the fibrosis is treated.
In cases of deep scar tissue that is stubborn, we need laser for scar tissue removal and that will be done by a laser specialist doctor.
